Widely regarded as the most iconic example of Catalan Modernisme, the basilica attracts over three million visitors each year. Architect Antoni Gaudí dedicated much of his life to the project, fully aware that he would not live to see its completion.

Gaudí took over the project in 1883 at the age of 31, following disagreements between the temple’s promoters and the original architect, Francisco de Paula del Villar. While he retained the traditional Latin cross layout, he reinterpreted Gothic architecture through innovative structural solutions. His use of angled columns and hyperboloid vaults eliminated the need for flying buttresses, transferring structural loads through the interior support system instead of external elements.
La Sagrada Família incorporates complex geometric forms such as hyperboloids, parabolas, helicoids, and conoids. These ruled surfaces allow for lighter, more refined structures while improving acoustics and natural lighting. To develop the design, Gaudí created detailed plaster models and an innovative system of suspended strings and weights, using inverted models to calculate the ideal angles for columns, vaults, and arches. This approach is reflected in the inclined columns of the Passion Façade, which resemble tensile structures while functioning in compression.

When completed, La Sagrada Família will feature 18 towers, carefully arranged to create a distinctive silhouette from every viewpoint.
